COVID-19 Pandemic Burnout

This session will focus on the wellbeing of healthcare workers providing care during the COVID-19 pandemic and will discuss how to recognize burnout in yourself and your colleagues, what steps to take if you find that you are starting to feel burned out strategies to minimize your risk of burnout, and suggestions for facilities to protect their staff.

Chaired by Dr. Mary Brindle of Ariadne Labs with psychiatrists Dr. Taxman and Dr. Kedare and anesthesiologist Dr. Igaga contributing their experiences and expertise for a practical session dedicated to healthcare providers - with a particular focus on those in low-and middle-income countries.

Speakers

Dr. Mary Brindle

Dr. Brindle is a pediatric surgeon and health systems researcher. She is the Director of the Safe Surgery Safe Systems Program at Ariadne Labs, and the Scientific Director of the Province of Alberta Surgery Strategic Care Network as well as Professor of Surgery and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. She has helped lead an international team to optimize the performance of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in High Income Countries and has worked to advance the rigor and scope of international Enhanced Recovery After Surgery guidelines.

Dr. Elizabeth Namugaya Igaga

Dr. Igaga is a Ugandan anesthesiologist and a lecturer at the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care, College of Health Sciences, Makerere University. She attended medical school and completed her Masters at Makerere University. She currently does her clinical practice at the Uganda Heart Institute. Elizabeth is currently the treasurer of the Association of Anesthesiologists of Uganda (AAU), a member of the Intensive care society of Uganda (ICSU) and a foundation fellow of the College of Anesthetists of East, Central and Southern Africa (CANECSA). She is also one of the 5 inaugural fellows of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation Healthcare Safety Fellowship and has an interest in provider well being.

Dr. Jahnavi Kedare

Dr. Kedare is Additional Professor, Department of Psychiatry, T.N. Medical College, BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai, India and has a special interest in Geriatric Psychiatry and Community Psychiatry.Dr Kedare is a member and past President of the Bombay Psychiatric Society, Life Fellow Member of Indian Psychiatric Society, and past Honorary Secretary and Life Fellow Member of the Indian Association for Geriatric Mental Health. She has served on the Editorial Boards of both the Journal of Geriatric Mental Health and Annals of Indian Psychiatry.

Dr. Jeffrey Taxman

Dr. Taxman is a Psychiatrist and trained Psychoanalyst and an Associate Clinical Faculty member of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Department of Psychiatry where he teaches theory and clinical technique to psychiatry residents. For twenty years he has developed an internationally recognized expertise in providing relief during massive community disasters, working extensively with professionals who are required to continue to work in the midst of these disasters. He has worked with police officers, military, Federal Law Enforcement Officers, and first responders in the US, China, Haiti, Jordan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal.
