Meet Nigeria's Sing and Smile Club
So often, clefts cause speech issues that make children embarrassed to speak, even after surgery. Our solution? Teach them how to sing.
In Nigeria, many people think children with clefts aren't as capable as other children. Some even think they are possessed. The result? Many children with clefts are ashamed to go out in public or raise their voices. With help from our partner Lagos University Teaching Hospital, we're helping to rewrite that narrative and give children with clefts the confidence they deserve. In the Sing and Smile Club, our patients harness the power of song and music to find the confidence within not only to speak up, but to sing before any audience.
