Actress, singer, and Smile Train supporter Lucy Hale had the opportunity to visit our local partners and patients in Mexico.
On Lucy’s first day in Mexico City, she met a four-month-old boy named Miguel living with an untreated cleft lip who was only weeks away from his Smile Train sponsored cleft surgery. Lucy commented that what impressed her the most was the positivity of Miguel’s mother. Despite her circumstances, she stayed positive about her son’s outlook and was eternally thankful to Smile Train for the free cleft surgery he was about to receive.
Next, Lucy was serenaded by a group of former Smile Train patients who sing in a cleft choir – this helps former cleft patients improve their speech and gain confidence. Lucy said that it was an inspiring performance that she will never forget.
The next day, Lucy traveled to visit local Smile Train partner Hospital del Niño DIF Hidalgo in Pachuca, Mexico to learn more about comprehensive cleft care. “This one partner has done more than 3,000 cleft surgeries! We got to meet the surgeons, orthodontists, dentists, therapists, and ear, nose, and throat doctors and see every step of the process up close,” she said.
Lucy said the highlight of her trip was watching a cleft surgery firsthand. “The surgeon let me stand behind his shoulder and watch – he explained everything that he was doing step-by step. It was incredible to see this little boy’s face change over the course of 45 minutes. We got to see the mom see her son for the first time after the surgery, which was just, you know, everyone was in tears. ” she said.
