Dr. Emile Damas: Haiti’s Smile Maker

March 9, 2016 | Smile Train

Dr. Emile Damas has worked tirelessly to bring new smiles to Haiti. This partnership is inspiring hope to Haitians who previously thought that cleft surgery was out of reach.

As a Haitian, Dr. Emile Damas is well aware of the many obstacles that a child living with an untreated cleft needs to overcome to receive cleft surgery – he doesn’t want the lack of a surgeon to be one of them.

In 2014, Dr. Damas connected with Smile Train staff and shared his desire to partner with Smile Train so that he could help the increasing backlog of children waiting for their new smiles.

Over the following weeks and months Dr. Damas participated in Smile Train training and educational opportunities and began helping children under the new Smile Train program at his hospital in northern Haiti.

With the new partnerships up and running many families, like Myloreca and her mother Milani above, traveled for days to Cap-Haïtien in the hopes of a free Smile Train sponsored surgery.

Dr. Damas continues to participate in training opportunities with Smile Train so that he can take on more complex cleft cases in the years to come and ultimately help more children in need. With his unwavering commitment to honing his craft, he is helping Haitian children remove barriers to find their new smiles.
