Bryan Hallas describes, in his own words, how his youngest son inspired his Maine Pointe co-workers to fundraise for Smile Train during Maine Pointe’s company event and during the holidays.
I first learned about Smile Train shortly after my second son was diagnosed with a cleft lip and palate about four months into the pregnancy. Like most parents who receive this news, we knew very little about cleft and wanted to learn as much as possible about how this would impact our child. The hospital staff recommended that we use Smile Train’s website as a resource — what we found out was both scary and encouraging.
We learned about the potential challenges a child born with a cleft can face, including difficulties eating, breathing, and speaking. This was difficult to read, as at the time, it seemed like our child was going to face a lifetime of hardship. However; we were encouraged when we learned that this was a treatable problem and children born with clefts go on to lead perfectly productive lives. Seeing the pictures on Smile Train’s website of smiling, happy children with treated clefts gave us hope.
I’ve seen first-hand how transformative cleft repair is — these surgeries have an immediate and permanent impact. With access to cleft surgery and comprehensive care, a child’s life is transformed. After experiencing this, supporting Smile Train in bringing this type of quality care to children all over the world has become important to my entire family.
My employer, Maine Pointe, has a corporate giving and social responsibility program that has supported a number of different charities over the years. During this year’s selection process, I shared my story and mentioned that Smile Train would be a good fit — I was thrilled when everyone agreed.
Maine Pointe raised an incredible $60,200 to support Smile Train this year. It was great to see everyone working together to ensure that we helped as many children as possible. I know that this contribution will have a lasting impact on the lives of many families around the world.
