Smile Train Provided a Record-Breaking 125,000 Free Cleft Surgeries in 2012
New York — 2012 was a year of much joy and some sadness for the Smile Train community. We celebrated the marriage of our first patient, Wang Li, the birth of her son, Wang Xiao Yu, our 750,000th surgery and mourned the loss of Smile Train surgeons Dr. Fernando Ortiz Monasterio and Dr. Prashant Shrestha and one of our most ardent supporters Walter Haefner. In 2012, we surpassed our 830,000th surgery, and despite economic setbacks and natural disasters, we were able to provide 125,000 free cleft surgeries — more than we have ever provided in a single year!
We also welcomed 185 new partner hospitals across the Smile Train network in 37 countries. Together with all of our supporters and partners, we have been able to reach more children with clefts than ever before. However, there are still more than one million children suffering with unrepaired clefts, and our New Year's Resolution is to reach more children. With your help, we can make sure that every child born with a cleft has the opportunity to live a full, productive life.
