Planned Giving in Support of Smile Train
The giving vehicles that allow you as a Smile Train donor to make larger gifts than you could make from your regular income are collectively called planned giving, which is sometimes referred to as gift planning. Some planned gifts provide life-long income to the donor and their heirs, while others use estate and tax planning techniques to provide for charity and their heirs in ways that maximize the gift and/or minimize its impact on the donor's estate. What they have in common is that they are ideal ways for you to continue and possibly increase your support of Smile Train, and help even more of the world’s poorest children suffering from unrepaired clefts.
Our Smiles for Life Society recognizes benefactors who have created a legacy of support for
Smile Train through a bequest provision in their will or other planned gift to sustain and enhance
Smile Train’s lifesaving and life-changing cleft repair programs around the world.
Planned gifts may allow you to:
- Make a larger charitable gift to Smile Train than you thought possible and create a legacy of support.
- Structure a gift that provides for your future financial support and that of your spouse and family.
- Reduce estate costs of your heirs.
- Reduce your current year income tax.
- Avoid or minimize capital gains tax on appreciated assets.

The Charitable IRA Rollover Is Back!
The tax law passed by Congress to avoid the “fiscal cliff,” the Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, included an extension of the charitable IRA rollover through December 31, 2013. The extension is good news for many donors who can afford to make charitable gifts using their IRA accounts.
From now through December 31, 2013, individuals age 70½ and older may make gifts from their traditional or Roth IRA accounts directly to Smile Train without being subject to Federal income tax on the IRA withdrawal. There is no charitable tax deduction in connection with this gift.
The Charitable IRA Rollover is an excellent way to support Smile Train and, perhaps, make a larger gift to Smile Train than you would have thought possible.
We encourage you to consult your own legal or tax advisor to see if the Charitable IRA Rollover is right for you. If you have questions, please contact us at 212.689.9199 or plannedgiving@smiletrain.org.
