We have a newly-created opportunity for a creative, entrepreneurial fundraiser or business developer to build an aggressive and sustainable major gifts fundraising program. Working closely with the Executive Director, the Chief Marketing Officer and the Development and Program staffs, the VP Development will be the primary driver behind the identification, cultivation and solicitation of high net worth individuals culled from the existing donor base. Additionally, s/he will be responsible for acquiring new major donors, including foundations/trusts and corporations. S/he will manage two fulltime employees, one in NY and one in the U.K.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and execute a strategy to build, cultivate, solicit and steward a portfolio of major donors through the identification of individual prospects from the existing database and other sources
  • Develop and execute a strategy for acquiring new major donors and foundations/corporations
  • Creatively package philanthropic opportunities, creating a menu of specific giving options for donors
  • Develop and implement cultivation events to further engage prospects in Smile Train’s work and more deeply connect them to the organization, including organizing donor trips to visit partner hospitals, surgeons and patients
  • Develop and implement a planned giving program
  • Develop, implement and oversee the systems and structures necessary to build and manage a major giving program.

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree required. MBA or other advanced degree preferred
  • 10+ years’ experience in major gifts fundraising or business development, with demonstrated success building donor relationships and soliciting and closing gifts, or managing a high net-worth portfolio of clients/customers
  • Success working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment with a strong ROI orientation
  • Ability to network effectively, leveraging a group of contacts to build a larger donor base
  • Ability to communicate passionately about Smile Train’s work while also presenting the facts and figures that demonstrate its impact
  • Available to travel both domestically and internationally
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to persuade others
  • Strong strategic and analytical skills
  • Strong organizational capabilities
  • Ability to set short and long term objectives that support the goals of the development department as a whole

Staff Accountant

The Staff Accountant will play an active role in multitude of accounting activities including general accounting and bookkeeping, financial reporting, year-end audit, budget and forecasting. The selected individual will work closely with the Controller and the VP of Finance.

This position addresses tight deadlines and will have contact with all levels of management and staff from other departments. This requires strong interpersonal communication skills both written and verbal.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Reconcile bank statements to general ledger
  • Accounts payable processing
  • Analysis and reconciliation of general ledger accounts (Prepaid Expenses, Fixed Assets and Depreciation, Grants payable and Accrued Expenses)
  • Responds to inquiries from the VP of Finance, Controller, and other charity staff regarding accounting and non-accounting issues
  • Assist in the compilation of information for the charity’s year-end, quarterly or monthly financial statements
  • Work with the Controller to ensure a clean and timely year-end audit
  • Assist in the compilation of information for the charity’s annual tax returns
  • Assist the Controller and VP of Finance with Special projects as required

Qualifications include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • 3 to 5 years experience in accounting and financial reporting as an accountant or auditor, that is, accounting background can be with a public accounting firm or industry
  • Ability to perform accounting research
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with Sage MIP Accounting System or other comparable accounting system a plus
  • Not for profit experience helpful, but not essential
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Suite with emphasis on Excel and Word
  • Able to work independently, handle multiple tasks, stay organized, work under pressure and meet deadlines
